Filings for Council Open
Filings for the position of mayor and village councilman opened yesterday, Tuesday, September 25. Last day for filing will be October 9th with the general election to be held on November 6th. Filing affidavits may be obtained at the village clerk’s office. First to file was councilman Folmer Carlsen who will be seeking a second elected term to that office. Mayor Harold Strand had not yet filed for re-election but indicated earlier in the week that he would seek another term. The term of the councilman Carl Anderson also expires this year but he has not indicated whether he will seek a second term.

Kasson State Bank invests in tomorrow
The Kasson State Bank (KSB) has awarded the Southeastern Minnesota Initiative Fund (SEMIF) a $1,000.00 donation toward the Fund’s 1993-1994 endowment campaign. SEMIF is a regional community and economic development fund dedicated to the regional cooperation, job creation and enhancing the communities of southeastern Minnesota. By “Investing in Tomorrow Today”, SEMIF’s annual endowment campaign theme, the KSD is demonstrating a strong commitment to the residents and communities of SEMIF’s 20 county region. The return on KSB’s investment will be continued funding for area businesses and non-profit organizations through SEMIF’s loan and grant programs. SEMIF uses local financial support to match a grant from the Minneapolis based McKnight Foundation. SEMIF has provided funding for projects totaling $276,656 in Dodge County. This funding has translated into job creation and the community services to residents and businesses. SEMIF is pleased to play a role in the future of our area by working with financial institutions like KSB. Thirty-two banks participated in the “Investing In Tomorrow Today” campaign for fiscal year 1992-1993 which was completed on June 30, 1993. The Initiative Fund has set a 1993-1994 goal of $492,000. To securely establish the endownment fund which will provide long term stability and regional autonomy for the fund.

Speeding motorists tagged in sting
Troopers in the Rochester District worked an extra 186 hours in southeast Minnesota and stopped 413 speeding drivers during the Safe & Sober enhanced enforcement campaign funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, August 27 through September 12. Troppers working the extra hours stopped a total of 448 drivers, issuing 257 tickets, including three arrests for DUI and four for driving after cancellation. Troppers were also looking for motorists who weren’t buckling up and issued 52 tickets for seat belt and child restraint violations. The speeding-targeted campaign was coordinated by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and included participation from more than 200 law enforcement agencies. “Speed limits are posted for a reason,” said Lt. Randy Slinger. “Obeying the speed limit is a requirement, not a suggestion. Also, motorists who choose not to buckle up are putting themselves at risk for serious injury or death.” Safe & Sober is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and designed to reduce traffic crashes and injuries through education and enforcement.

Cardboard box city fundraiser for SEMCAC
The Third Annual Dodge County Cardboard Box City fundraiser for SEMCAC will take place Thursday, October 17 at Faith Lutheran Church and West Park in Dodge Center. This is a fundraiser for a special fund that helps people who fall between the cracks in the other programs offered. There is a $20 per person registration fee this year, which goes to SEMCAC, and people are encouraged to fundraiser $100. Raise the $100 and receive a T-shirt. Each person uses a cardboard box to sleep in for the night. The only food they have is the soup supper served at the church and a simple breakfast in the morning before they go home. Last year there were five churches represented and this year information was mailed out to 45 organizations in West Concord, Claremont, Dodge Center, Kasson, Mantorville and Hayfield.
