NEWS ALERT: Kasson man arraigned in Kalmar shooting death

A Kasson man was arraigned Tuesday morning in the shooting death of a man Sunday in Kalmar Township. The shooting in the 5000 block of County Road 105 in Kalmar Township left a 70-year-old man dead.
William Shillingford, 31, Kasson, faces charges of second-degree murder with intent, without premeditation; second-degree murder without intent, while committing a felony, and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
The victim was a 70-year-old male who lived at the incident location, said Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office Captain James Schueller.
At about 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, deputies were dispatched to the shooting. Dispatch notes indicate that a suspicious vehicle had arrived on the caller’s property and a male family member had gone out to investigate.
Upon doing so, he was shot at least once in the upper body area. The suspect then fled the scene on foot and deputies set up a perimeter to contain the suspect.
Mutual assistance was requested and officers from the Rochester Police Department, Kasson Police Department K9, Goodhue County Sheriff, and the Minnesota State Patrol all arrived on the scene. Byron Fire and Mayo Clinic Ambulance also responded to assist.
A short distance away from the initial scene, a gun was found in an unoccupied structure. After further search and tracking, the suspect was then located and taken into custody without any further issue.
Although the family member who was shot at the scene received immediate medical care, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been requested to assist with the investigation. Scheuller said the Sheriff’s Office is confident that the suspect is in custody and that there is no further threat to the public.
Authorities were not releasing the name of the victim earlier this week, as this is an ongoing investigation. More details will be given once authorities can do so, Scheuller said.
