My (former) August Adversary

I hate August!
As a child, August signaled the end of summer and the beginning of the long days associated with school and homework.
It also meant the never-ending stream of back-to-school commercials, which only multiplied my dread of starting school.
The beginning of August was devoted to two-a-days for my high school soccer team. While it was a good time to improve my game, conditioning was far from enjoyable.
If you’re a Minnesota Twins fan like me, August also brought meaningless baseball for the past few years.

In addition, the weather often gets uncomfortably hot and humid almost every day.
However, this year is going to be different!
I’m trying to change my perspective on August. I’ll try to view this month as “half-full” rather than “half-empty.”
Yes, school is around the corner, but I’m entering the last year of my undergraduate degree, so there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Plus, my spring semester will just be a couple classes, so I really only have one hard semester left.
As far as those darn back-to-school commercials, I can always mute the television, and with smartphones I can easily nd something that interests me during those 30 to 45-second commercials.

I’m no longer in high school sports, and with an indoor stationary bike and treadmill I don’t have to endure the humidity to get some exercise.
While it may be hot during the afternoon, once it cools down in the evenings it can be enjoyable to be outdoors.
So what I’m trying to say is that maybe, just maybe, August doesn’t deserve my hate.
I’m skeptical, but maybe my new perspective on this month will surprise me.
Besides, football is coming back, so how bad can August be.
