MAN’S BEST FRIEND

A few years ago the DCI began to allow local students to advertise for free in the classifieds sections of the newspaper and shopper.
Since then many students have benefited through this by promoting their small businesses in the community.
One of those people is Kasson native Caleb Kern.
Kern began his pet sitting business in 2007 when he first began advertising in the student section of the newspaper.
Because of his disabilities, including having a seizure disorder, his mother Sue explained that they knew it would be a good business for him and one that he could do well.
For Kern, watching pets is more than just a business or a way to make money. For him, it’s something that he has always been passionate about.
Growing up his family has had dogs and cats, which Kern enjoyed spending time around.
“I like both of them, they are very friendly and nice,” he explained.
While Kern enjoys all of the animals he gets to watch, he admits that his favorite animal is dogs.
Over the years, the breeds and sizes of the dogs that he has watched through his pet service business has been very diverse.
He explained that he has watched dogs that were very small and dogs all the way to the size of a German Shepard.
“They are all very unique,” he said.
Since he started his business he explained that he has watched more dogs than he has cats.
Some of the things that he enjoys most about watching dogs is all the different ways he can interact with them.
“It’s fun to interact with them,” he said.
He said that pet sitting is also something that is fun.
“The pet sitting is very fun,” he said, “I can feed them walk them and give them a treat if they are nice,” he explained.
One day the K-M graduate hopes to have his pet sitting business as a full-time venture, but for now he also deliverers the Post Bulletin in town, something he started doing a couple of years ago.
Whether he’s watching a pet, walking a dog or delivering a newspaper, people in the community know they can count on a friendly smile when they see him around town.
