Longhorn on the loose in Dodge County Sunday
A runaway Texas Longhorn cow provided some excitement in Dodge County Sunday afternoon.
Sheriff Scott Rose said that at about 2 p.m. the 911 Dispatch Center received a call from Brandon Schmoll on County Road 34 just east of Dodge Center that one of his Texas Longhorn cows had gotten out while they were trying to transfer her into the pasture and they were requesting assistance in getting it back into the pasture.
Dispatch then started receiving calls saying the cow was currently on the railroad tracks headed towards highway 14. Canadian Pacific Railroad was contacted and made aware of the situation while deputies responded to try and assist. While deputies were searching that area, Rose said, they started receiving 911 calls reporting the cow on highway 14 in the median headed towards highway 56 south, approximately 2.5 miles southwest of the farm. The cow had made several attempts to cross over the cable median barrier. Deputies shut down traffic in both lanes of highway 14 multiple times during this incident, Rose said.
The owners attempted to capture the cow several times which lead to it violently charging the individuals. One family member was struck by the animal charging him but refused medical treatment. Due to the cow’s aggressive behavior and danger to the public, the owner gave deputies permission to shoot the animal to prevent anyone from getting hurt.
The cow eventually travelled over the cable barriers, across the eastbound lane of traffic on highway 14 and headed south on 200th Avenue towards Dodge Center Airport. When the cow was in a field in an area safe to shoot, one of the deputies shot at it, striking the animal, yet it continued to run. It then charged in the direction of another one of the deputies and his squad car. That deputy was able to shoot the cow and put it down at approximately 2:50 p.m. ending the incident without anyone getting hurt.
