A leisurely walk brings big benefits

Walking has become a great form of exercise for me over the past few years.
I used to be a little more adventurous by taking up running as my main form of exercise. But other things seemed to get in the way and it fell by the wayside.

For a while I took to the treadmill at the fitness center.
Only problem with that was I couldn’t find the time to fit in my workouts.
So I took to walking.
Many aspiring runners dismiss ‘walk’ as a four-letter word, as if it’s cheating, quitting, or not really exercising. But walking is actually the ideal form of exercise for most people.
It’s free, and you can do it anytime in any place with no special skill, pricey membership or equipment required.
It is the best way to build strong bones, muscles and tendons without getting hurt. And it’s the easiest way to develop the fitness you need to run down the road.
Some of the benefits of walking are strengthening of the heart, lowering disease risk, losing weight and preventing dementia. In addition, it tones up the legs, boosts Vitamin D, gives you energy and make you happy (well, hopefully that is the case).
Studies show that a brisk walk is just as effective as antidepressants in mild to moderate cases of depression, releasing feel good endorphins while reducing stress and anxiety. So for positive mental health, walking is an absolute must.
Earlier this year I also found another reason why I need to maintain my walking. My blood pressure climbed a little too high and the doctor got after me to do more exercising.

I’ve found that walking serves as gentle, low-impact exercise that’s easy, free and available to everyone. Isn’t it time to go in hot pursuit of walking for your health?
