KoMets send 10 to state

One year ago, the Kasson-Mantorville wrestling team put an exclamation point on the dominant season they were having on its way to the program’s second state championship. With nine wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament, it showed the top-level talent that the school has produced in order to become one of the best teams in the state.
On Febraury 25, the KoMets were able to best their efforts from a year ago as they were able to push through 10 wrestlers to the state tournament including a whopping seven Section 1AA championships.
“Ten is a great number to send,” K-M head coach Jamie Heidt declared. “It’s the most we’ve ever sent and I feel like we represented ourselves well in a very tough section.”
Leading the way for the KoMets’ championship parade was senior Brady Berge, who won his sixth section championship at 160 pounds. After having his run to his fourth state championship derailed by injury a year ago, he’ll look to reclaim the title at this weekend’s state tournament.
Noah Ryan also repeated as section champion with his victory at 220 pounds. The fellow senior will be looking to repeat as a state champion this weekend as he took home the title in the 195-pound bracket last year.
Keaten Schorr also repeated as section champion in the 138 pound bracket. As a 2015 state champion, Schorr was able to fly through to the section championship and will be looking for his second state title this weekend.
Finally, Jared Johnson repeated as 113-pound champion and will be looking for his first state championship this weekend.
Along with the usual suspects, the KoMets had three first time section winners with Robby Horsman (120 pounds), Patrick Kennedy (170 pounds) and Brett Paulson (heavyweight) all taking home first place in their respective brackets.
