KoMets have strong showing at Winona State Classic

The Kasson-Mantorville girls basketball team had a strong showing at the Winona State Holiday Classic last week as they were able to take a game from host Winona and had a great effort against #8AAA Red Wing. While the KoMets were strong in one game, they showed they had plenty to improve upon if they want to make a run in March.
The KoMets kicked off their run in the invitational by taking on Winona on December 28. K-M was dominant in this one as they took the lead from the opening tip and were able to build a 45-27 lead on the WInhawks at the half.
A big key for K-M was their defense as they held Winona to 29 percent from inside the arc. With the Winhawks unable to convert inside, the KoMets rained nine threes including three from Lexie Hugeback, who also chipped in with 22 points off the bench. With Mya Suess (12 points), Aby Shubert (11 points) and Ashlyn Bigelow (10 points) also scoring in double figures, the KoMets were able to pick up a 73-48 victory over their section rival.
K-M would try to keep the momentum going the following afternoon as they took on Red Wing. The Wingers were also coming in on a high as they took down #2AAA and previously unbeaten Waseca on Friday night. With some strong defense of their own, the Wingers were able to hold the KoMets to 3-of-28 shooting from the floor and just 11 points in the first half.
“We felt pretty good about how we were playing on defense and about the shot selection in the first half,” K-M head coach Ryan Haraldson said. “The ball just didn’t go in the hoop.”
The KoMets would make some adjustments and were able to get to the free-throw line while also crashing the offensive glass on the back of a season-high 16 rebounds by Mya Suess. Although Avery Irish would lead the team with 11 points and six rebounds, K-M would eventually fall 62- 46 to the Wingers.
K-M is now 6-5 on the season, but they have been strong in section play accumulating a 3-1 record in Section 1AAA. The KoMets will have a light week coming out of the break as they’ll travel to CHOF on Friday before jumping back into conference play next week against Pine Island.
