KM's Winning Streak Comes To An End
A wrestling fan might wonder when was the last time the KM wrestling team lost a conference dual. Year after year, the four time state champions (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018), continue to dominate the HVL. The KoMets have already demonstrated two big, come from behind, wins this season.
The KoMets have remained unblemished in the HVL conference since 2009. Their last HVL conference loss was against Byron on February 7, 2009, where they fell 36-29.
That winning streak came to an abrupt halt last Saturday, when the KoMets fell to unranked Zumbrota-Mazeppa at the Cannon Falls triangular. The match ended in a tie 33-33. The match count was also tied, 7-7. ZM took the win by criteria, having more pins than the KoMets.
Zumbrota-Mazeppa added up their team points early, taking the first four matches. Luke Swanson (106) lost by decision. Devin Andrist (113) lost by pin fall. Kody Fleck (120) lost by pin fall. Joey Kennedy (126) lost by major decision.
Dominic Mann (132) got the KoMets on the board, winning by decision. Henry Paulson (138) lost by pin fall. The Cougars would forfeit to Logan Vaughan (145) and begin to adjust their line-up, knowing they needed to do their best to counter balance the second half of KM's line-up. Keyan Lageneire (152) lost by pin fall.
The KoMets would claim the next four matches. Dylan Baker (160) won by major decision. Cole Glazier (170) won by TF. Kail Wynia (182) won by decision. Bennett Berge (195) won by pin fall.
With two matches to go, the KoMets were trailing 27-30. Jackson Kennedy (220) currently ranked #5 at 195 in Class AA, faced ZM's Ethan Kovars, ranked #3 at 195 in Class AA, for a marquee matchup. With Kennedy ahead 3-2, Kovars would grab a last minute TD and 3 NF points to close out the third period. Kennedy lost by decision, 7-3. The ZM coaches, team, and fans knew that their victory at 220 clinched the dual. Anthony Moe-Tucker would get the pin fall at heavyweight. KoMets lost the tied dual by criteria, ending their winning streak.
The KoMets beat Cannon Falls, 56-18. The Bombers struggle to fill their line-up, giving up five forfeits to the KoMets. Kody Fleck (120) would claim his first Varsity win, 8-3. Grabbing wins and bonus points for the KoMets were L. Vaughan (145) with a pin fall, Wynia (170) with a TF, Berge (182) and Jackson Kennedy (195) both pick up pin falls.
Last Thursday, the KoMets hosted PEM. The anticipated match of the night came at 160. Cole Glazier, currently ranked #4, faced #9 Cael Marx. Glazier took control of the match early in the first period, going on to claim an 11-0 major decision. PEM's only other ranked wrestler, Cooper Hofschulte (138), claimed a pin fall over Henry Paulson.
L. Vaughan (145) and Berge remain undefeated for the KoMets.
“This year has been a roller coaster. I am just glad we have a season right now. Hopefully we have a post season and state tournament to go out and prove ourselves." said junior, Kail Wynia.
