Kasson seeks to reduce future flooding

Worried that more flooding may be on the way, the Kasson City Council is exploring ways to reduce future flooding.
Councilman Lonnie Zelinske expressed his concern about more flooding at the Jan. 22 city council meeting.
“I have fear that this spring if we get rain or snow, we may have more flooding than we did last year,” he said.
Having worked with the DNR before, he called Dodge County’s hydrologist Todd Piepho and spoke to his second-in-command Dan Girolamo who said there are some things they can do to at least help the city get started on flood prevention.
“The first thing we need to do is create a rough draft for what we can do with Masten Creek to alleviate some of the flooding, produce a map that shows the affected area from the flooding last year, and produce a map that shows a residential area that was flooded,” Zelinske said. He added residential damage sometimes holds more weight than commercial or public damage.
“If we can put that all together, create an application, get it to them, there’s no guarantee, but if they can help us get DNR funds, which are very minimal, but they can send us to state to get state aid. Federal funds may be available, but he said first and foremost the city has to show that we are wanting to move in that direction,” said Zelinske.
