Kasson man sentenced for 2022 murder

A Kasson man has been sentenced to 261 months in prison for the killing of an Olmsted County man in 2022.
William Isaac Shillingford, 33, was sentenced last week in Olmsted County District Court for the May 8, 2022, killing of John Colbert, 70, in Kalmar Township. He had pleaded guilty to felony second-degree murder with intent in November 2023.
The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office was called around 10:45 p.m. on May 8, 2022, to a residence in rural Kalmar Township after report a man had been shot. When deputies arrived at the location they found a pickup truck, later determined to be owned by Shillingford, parked in the driveway and a trail of blood leading to the front door of the residence, the criminal complaint said.
Inside officers found Colbert who had been shot. They attempted life-saving efforts, but he was pronounced dead after the Mayo Clinic Ambulance and Byron first responders arrived.
Shillingford was later located running toward the driveway of a nearby home and arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
He accepted a plea deal in November as his trial was scheduled to begin and pleaded guilty to felony second-degree murder with intent. Sentencing was scheduled for January 8, 2024.
Under the terms of the plea agreement he was sentenced to 262 months in prison, just under 22 years, with credit given for the 610 days he has spent in jail since his arrest. He will serve his sentence at St. Cloud State Prison.
