K-M’s offense comes alive

The Kasson-Mantorville softball team had a great week at the plate, which led them to a pair of Hiawatha Valley League victories over Goodhue and Pine Island. Although they came up short against a strong Lourdes team to complete the three- game sweep, their offense left enough optimism that K-M can slug it out with any team in the opposing dugout.
The week got off to a tough start as the KoMets hosted Rochester Lourdes on Apr. 23. Ashley Christensen was solid against the potent Lourdes offense, holding the Eagles to nine hits over seven innings with a walk and five strikeouts. Unfortunately, she would give up four runs thanks to some defensive lapses by the KoMets.
After the Eagles scored three runs off errors in the top of the third, K-M would battle back as Kayla Schubert would drive in a run on a bunt single and a RBI grounder by Emma Simmon would cut the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately,  that would be the end of the KoMets’ offense for the night as Lourdes would add another run off an error in the top of the fifth to take home a 4-2 victory.
From that point on, the KoMets took their frustrations of losing four of their first six games to start the year out on their next two opponents. Thirsty for a win, K-M traveled to Pine Island on Apr. 25 and got involved in what was a high scoring affair early with the two teams combining for seven runs in the first two innings.
With K-M needing an answer to slow the Panthers down, Libby Maxon was called upon and produced with 5 1/3 scoreless innings allowing just one hit, two walks and eight strikeouts. The KoMets’ offense would feed off of that with Kayla (3-4, 2 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) and Malia Schubert (2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI) taking charge at the top of the order and Meridith Wright (3-4, R, RBI), Hayley Murphy (2-3, 2 R, 3B, 2 RBI) and Avery Irish (2-4, 2 R) producing in the middle of the lineup in a 13-3 victory.
That momentum would continue on Apr. 26 as Malia Schubert would jump start the KoMets at the plate again with a two-run homer in the second inning and a three-run home run in the third. With Emma Simon turning in a dominant performance in the circle with four shutout innings with four hits and six strikeouts, K-M was able to make short work of the Wildcats in a five-inning, 10-0 victory.
