K-M concludes ‘immersive experiences’ initiative

Kasson-Mantorville School District unveiled its latest immersive career event tailored for elementary students on May 7, this time focusing on the realms of science and health, according to a press release distributed by the district.
“Building on the success of the celebrated ‘Immersive Experiences’ initiative, now finishing its third year, young minds are poised for an unforgettable encounter with professionals representing diverse fields of expertise,” the release stated.
Previous Immersive Experiences have focused on engineering, fine arts, earth sciences, health sciences and my community. For the latest event concentrating on science and health, students even had the chance to attend a “career fair,” with a variety of professionals on hand to inform students of their job opportunities.
At first glance, it may seem elementary-age kids are too young to think about their future careers, but immersive career organizers say that’s not so.
In fact, in hearing about potential career opportunities, students come away with a broader knowledge of what their future holds and find out science and health has more to offer than “being a doctor or a nurse,” said Jennifer Kujath, K-8 high potential coordinator for Kasson-Mantorville Schools.
“There’s lots in the healthcare field,” she said, “and with Mayo in our own backyard, there are so many opportunities. We are getting them to think about what they want to do in their future.”
For the May 7 event, fourth-grade students participated in a day filled with exploration and discovery, immersing themselves in hands-on activities led by esteemed local experts in science and health. From dissecting mysteries of the human body to unraveling the wonders of biology and the environment, each activity helped ignite curiosity and deepened understanding of the interconnectedness of science and health, the district reported.
In partnership with community organizations, students delved into an array of engaging activities aimed at broadening their horizons. Dodge County Public Health took the lead in educating students on essential public health concepts, ranging from emergency preparedness to maternal and child health programs, while also providing valuable insights into preventive care and community resources.
Beyond the classroom walls, students embarked on a journey of discovery, exploring topics as diverse as holistic massage benefits, the marvels of radiography and sonography, the intricacies of biology and genetics, and the cutting-edge innovations shaping modern medical surgical procedures.
This collaborative effort between K-M Public Schools and local industry partners underscores a commitment to early career awareness and empowering students to chart their own path toward future success. “Our immersive experience days serve as a gateway to endless possibilities, allowing KoMet learners to glimpse into the vast tapestry of career opportunities that await them,” said Ashley Kaplan, director of student and staff support systems.
By nurturing a spirit of curiosity and providing hands-on learning opportunities, these immersive experiences pave the way for students to envision their educational journey and unlock the doors to a world of endless possibilities, the district’s release said. The science/health event stands as the finale of the series, capping off a year of inspiration, discovery, and boundless exploration.
