John W. Fyer, 79, passed away Nov. 11 in Aldeia, Brasil.
John was born May 14, 1937 in Owatonna, Minnesota and married Ligia Barbosa-Clementino on July 30, 1966 in Bahia, Brasil. John earned an Honorable Discharge from the US Air Force. He served four years in the US Peace Corp in rural Brasil. Earned a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Math and Physics and a Master’s degree majoring in School Administration from Winona State. He both taught and was the administrator of an American School in Recife, Brasil until he and Ligia started their own Escola Internacional de Aldeia, which now has over 800 students. He was a member of the Rotary International and received a grant from the Rotary for a day care center in rural Aldeia, that they named after him. They also built a Community Reception Center and some low-income housing units in Aldeia, Brasil.
John is survived by his wife Ligia, duaghter Christianne (Paul) Fosse and son Patrick of Tampa, Florida, son Michael (Samyla) of Aldeia, Brasil and six grandchildren, sister Judith Severson of Kasson and brother Robert (Nancy) of Byron, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Willis and Pauline Fryer of Mantorville. Memorial services were held in Aldeia, Brasil.
