The Mantorville City Council has chosen Jerrod Kappers to fill the vacancy left after the passing of Lyle Hoaglund.
At their March 9 meeting, the council heard from four candidates — Kappers, Anthony Meyers, Laura Schroeder, and William Reding. Holly Schmidt withdrew her application.
After short statements from each candidate, council members were allowed to ask questions of the applicants. A runoff vote was then held, with Kappers and Anthony Meyers taking the top two spots before Kappers was ultimately chosen. He immediately took the oath of office and sat on the council the rest of the meeting.
Kappers, a Wisconsin native, has worked as an engineer for Oshkosh Corporation — Defense for 11 years with an additional seven years as the chief engineer at Oshkosh Corporation — McNeilus.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia.
In his application submitted to the city, Kappers said, “I grew up in a small-town environment rooted in farm, family, and strong community values. That upbringing shaped my belief in showing up, helping where needed, and supporting your neighbors. Community isn’t just where we live, it’s who we are.”
Kappers ran unsuccessfully in the Kasson-Mantorville School Board race this past fall, to fill the vacant seat given up by Amy Olson.
Kappers will remain on council until the end of the year and said he plans to run for election in November.
