I Was Thinking... SFW

If you see somebody walking around aimlessly this weekend, you may know someone who is suffering from a severe case of SFW. It is a common problem that happens the week after Super Bowl. SFW is Seasonal Football Withdrawal. It is a very serious problem for mostly men who now have no more football games to watch.
From August to early February, their need to watch football is satisfied by a wide range of games. Teams report to training camp in July and if you are close enough to a NFL city, you can go and watch your favorite players practice for the upcoming season. The pre-season is kicked off by the NFL Hall of Fame game in early August. Soon after that both high school and college games begin.
During September and October, an avid football fan can watch anywhere from 7 to 10 games a week. The NFL now has a Thursday night game to start the activities. Friday night is mostly reserved for high school games. On a Saturday, a true fan can watch between 3-4 college games if they have the right cable options. Sunday has three NFL games they can view, and the final game is the Monday night contest. During these months, a blurry eyed fan can consume the ultimate amount of pre-game shows, actual games, and post-game analysis of the week’s action. But then November arrives.
The first to end their season is the high school teams as they crown the state championship in about six divisions in November. But the college and pro teams are still going strong. Toward the middle of December, the regular college season has wound down and the only thing that is left is Bowl Games. Following the college playoffs, a national champion is crowned in early January and college football wraps it up for another season. But the NFL continues on.
Football, which once was considered a fall sport, is still continuing through December and into January. The last regular season games are during the first week of January. Then only the teams that made the playoffs are still in action and finally after a week’s break, the Super Bowl is played in February.
Six months of football and then, nothing. No pre-game show, no games, half time analysis or post-game review. It is over. The fan who has been raised to a fever pitch with a week of Super Bowl hype before the big game now has nothing but memories. For the fans of 31 teams, the season ended in failure. Only Eagles fans celebrate beyond the final game. But even for them, now a week later, it is all over.
So, for several weeks, avid fans may feel lost and alone, not knowing what to do on a Sunday afternoon. If they are NASCAR fans, the season is just starting, and they can watch three hours of cars making left turns at high rates of speed. But believe it or not, football is just a couple weeks away.
The NFL Combine, which brings together college players to perform before NFL scouts. starts February 27. If you love football no matter who is playing, you can catch the beginning of the United Football League (UFL) on March 28. During their season there is the all important three day event called the NFL Draft on April 24-26. And remember the NFL training camp starts in the middle of July. So, football fans hang in there, this is just a short lull before it all starts again.
