Honoring military personnel, veterans

This month we embrace National Military Appreciation Month, a time to honor and express gratitude to the men and women who have served, or are currently serving, in the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as their families.
This month-long observance, established by Congress in 1999, encompasses several significant events:
Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 10)
Armed Forces Day (May 17)
Memorial Day (May 26)
Let's support our veterans this month and every month!

Protecting Girls' Sports
Last week, I offered the “Preserving Girls Sports Act” A42 amendment, requiring school sports to be separated by biological sex. This state version of Title IX would protect girls’ sports for biological girls. I’m saddened that this amendment to the education bill did not pass.
Support for girls’ sports have made tremendous strides since I was a student athlete. The entire purpose of Title IX is to provide equal support for both sexes and promote the expansion of sports for women and girls. Girls deserve an equal playing field and an opportunity to grow as athletes free from unfair and unsafe competition from those who are born biologically male. It’s disappointing and wrong we couldn’t get bipartisan support to uphold the promise of Title IX and protect girls participating in athletics.

Congratulations to Keri Heintzeman
Last Tuesday night, Republican Keri Heintzeman won the open seat in Senate District 6 - which spans from Brainerd to Grand Rapids. I look forward to working with Senator Heintzeman and extend a warm welcome! All senate seats are now filled - 33 Republicans and 34 Democrats.
