Guardian Angel Saves Man

With his vehicle stuck in the snow at a local cemetery, an elderly man left on foot to get help, but quickly became overcome with the snow and cold conditions himself. His body temperature was quickly falling and his prognosis didn’t look good as he lay in the snow. 
But things soon changed when a guardian angel showed up to save him. The guardian angel happened to be Dodge County sheriff’s deputy Scott Prins, who was on routine patrol and stumbled across the man’s vehicle in the snowbank at Evergreen Cemetery in Mantorville Dec. 28.
Prins initially could not get into the cemetery because it was blocked by a large tree. Instead of turning around and driving away, he decided to take an alternate route into the cemetery through the secondary entrance to check the property.
And it’s a good thing he did.
Prins found a vehicle with its headlights on. After driving up on the car, he saw it was stuck and occupied by an elderly woman. She explained that she and her husband came to the cemetery to visit their son’s grave about three hours prior. She told Prins that her husband left on foot for help because they didn’t have a cell phone. 
The deputy began searching the cemetery and quickly stumbled across the man lying in the snow along the east fence line. The man was wet and cold with ice buildup on his clothing. He was conscious but barely coherent. 
When the ambulance arrived, the 84-year-old man’s body temperature had dipped to 91.7 degrees. With temperatures in the 20s, the man likely would not have survived much longer, according to Sheriff Scott Rose. 
For his heroic actions, Rose honored Prins with a lifesaving award Friday night during the sheriff office’s second annual banquet at the Kasson Legion. The award recognizes outstanding police performance in the saving of a human life and the display of conspicuous initiative, capability and attention to duty.
Prins has been a patrol deputy for about 10 years assigned to the Mantorville area and the east side of the county.
