A FAMILY TRADITION

Kasson-Mantorville 2025 graduate Caisen Thome is heading to the University of South Dakota to play Division I football, continuing a family legacy that began with his father.
“Being at USD and following in my dad’s footsteps means a lot,” Thome said. “He’s someone I always looked up to, and now I’m living it. It’s a special thing.”
Thome, a strong safety known for his physical and technical play, said his parents remained neutral during his recruitment, encouraging him to choose the school that felt right. After visiting campuses across the country, it was a trip to Vermillion that made the difference.
“Nothing had felt right until I got out here,” he said. “Meeting the staff, seeing the town and facilities, and connecting with the team — it just finally felt right.”
Playing in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, one of the top football championship subdivision leagues in the country, was another major draw.
“Being close to home, in the best FCS D-I conference, and confident in the staff and my position coach, made USD stand out,” Thome said.
Now officially a Coyote, Thome is embracing the challenge ahead. He’s already building a strong relationship with safeties coach Josh Manchigiah and learning from veteran teammates.
“I love the way Coach Manch has our safeties play, fast, physical and violent. That fits my game well,” he said.
Thome credits his faith, family, and friends for helping him through tough times and injuries.
“My motivation always came first from my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and second from my family and friends,” he said. “I can’t thank them enough.”
Reflecting on his time at K-M, Thome said he’s proud of how he responded to adversity and grateful for the teammates who pushed him to grow. Off the field, he plans to continue excelling academically and remain an A student.
As he begins this new chapter, Thome is focused on learning the defense, getting stronger and earning playing time.
“I’m super excited to be out here,” he said. “This is where I’m meant to be.”
