DFL endorses Bohman in Congress race

Minnesota First Congressional District candidate Rachel Bohman received the endorsement from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor during its convention on Saturday, May 4, at Owatonna Middle School.
“I’m honored to receive the backing of residents from across Southern Minnesota,” Bohman said. “From farmland to main-street businesses to world renowned medical care and research, Congressional District 1 is unique. Our diverse district needs a strong voice in Congress to ensure strong communities and success far into the future.”
Bohman, a longtime Rochester resident, who previously served as an election official, assistant county attorney and Rochester Township Board member, is taking on Republican Brad Finstad.
Finstad originally won a special election to finish out Jim Hagedorn’s term following his death, in 2022, and then won his reelection race in the fall. The seat has been occupied by the GOP since Gov. Tim Walz, who won six consecutive times, opted to run in the governor’s race in 2018.
In a press release it explained Bohman is married to her husband Kyle, has two daughters, and wanted to raise her family “with Southern Minnesota values.”
“My brother and I were raised by a single mom who struggled with addiction at times,” Bohman said. “We lived in extreme poverty and relied on food stamps. I was always grateful to the good people of Southern Minnesota for baskets of food during the holidays, Christmas gifts and clothing donations. Coming together for those facing tough times and caring about them is what community has always meant to me and are the values that I hope my children learn.”
If elected Bohman named passing a farm bill as a top priority, along with investing in “healthcare so people do not have to travel so far for care and farmers don’t have to break the bank to pay monthly premiums; and work for incentives to revive locally owned main-street businesses,” a campaign press release stated.
“I am ready to make a difference in Washington, D.C.,” Bohman said. “I will listen to and fight for residents of Congressional District 1 to deliver results.”

Finstad Earns GOP Endorsement
Meanwhile in Jackson, southern Minnesota Republicans “overwhelmingly endorsed” Finstad for the nomination, as he looks to win a second full term in Congress.
“Congressman Finstad has been a passionate fighter for the people of southern Minnesota, and we’re excited to see what he’ll accomplish with an additional term,” CD 1 MNGOP Chairman Aaron Farris wrote in a statement.
In a press release the CD 1 MNGOP said it’s looking forward to working with Finstad “and all of our endorsed candidates in CD 1.”
“With the entire federal government and the majority in the Minnesota House up for grabs, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Republicans in CD will rise to the challenge and deliver on our promises for Minnesotans across the state,” the release stated.
Finstad on his Facebook page wrote “Thankful to be unanimously endorsed by the Minnesota First District Republicans today. Appreciate everyone’s support and look forward to working together to win in November!”
