DC man charged after fleeing officer

Eric James Marquardt (32) of Dodge Center, was charged on Monday with one felony count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
According to the complaint, on Dec.8 Deputy Breuer observed a vehicle cross the fog line and centerline and take a sudden turn, cutting off oncoming traffic. Deputy Breuer attempted to catch up to the vehicle, but the vehicle appeared to increase its speed and turn off all lights. Deputy Breuer continued the pursuit and saw the vehicle travel through a T intersection and launch into a nearby field, where it crashed into a creek.
Deputy Breuer approached the vehicle, and noticed smoke coming from the front of the heavily damaged truck. Contact was then made with Marquardt who informed Deputy Breuer that he was ok, but was unable to get out of the vehicle. Deputy Breuer was able to instruct Marquardt how to exit the vehicle by unlocking the doors. Deputy Breuer noticed that Marquardt seemed very confused and unable to comprehend simple instructions. As Marquardt exited his vehicle, Deputy Breuer could smell a strong odor of alcohol.
Due to a large laceration on Marquardt’s head, first aid was administered and he was taken to St. Mary’s by ambulance. Marquardt admitted to the ambulance staff that he was drinking prior to the incident.
After being released from St. Mary’s Marquardt was transported to the Steele County Jail.
According to jail records he has since been released.
If convicted of the most serious charge, Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Marquardt can face up to three years and one day in prison and or a fine of $5,000.
