Community raises thousands of dollars for Wharton family

On a Sunday morning after church, the people of Byron and the surrounding communities banded together to help raise more than $8,000 for the Whartons’ medical expenses after their son Lukas passed away on June 1. 
The women’s group at Christ the King Catholic Church in Byron, the Wharton’s parish, wanted to help the family in some way following the accident.
“It started with a couple of emails between women here at the parish,” Heather Connelly, treasurer of Christ the King’s women’s group, said. “We needed to do something for the family.”
