COBRAS SPRING FORWARD
The Triton track and field team opened their 2019 season by getting a head start on their competition as they headed to Winona for the Lewiston-Altura Early Bird Invitational on Mar. 25. The meet featured eight teams from Southeastern Minnesota as well as La Crosse Aquinas and La Crosse Logan and despite the field, the Cobras were able to stand out.
One of the biggest strengths for Triton boys team this season will be its talent on the track. That advantage stood out on the campus of St. Mary’s University with the Cobras’ performance in the 400 meter dash. Triton would register a 1-2 finish in the event with London Dostal finishing first with a time of 54.67 seconds and Anthony Avery not far behind at 56.29. In addition Fernando Bugarin and Trace Sackett both had strong opening meets. Bugarin would have a pair of second place finishes in the 55 meter dash (6.96 seconds) and 200 meter dash (24.79) while distance runner Sacket would win the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:01.40 and finish second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.69.
These efforts came together in the sprint medley as the team of Devin Dohrmann, Justin Ness, Noah Thomas, Trace Sackett were able to beat out La Crosse Aquinas by eight one-hundredths of a second making their time of 3:47.80 good enough for the victory.
While the boys mastered the track, the girls made their mark in the field, especially when it came to the jumping events. Nell Graham started her senior season off on the right foot taking home victories in the high jump (5-00), long jump (15-11.00) and even winning her specialty event — the 800 meter run — with a time of 2:35.58 that edged out teammate Brenna Essig (2:45.57).
In addition to Graham’s strong performance, Chloe Staub made her mark both on the track and in the field. Staub would finish second to Graham in the high jump (4- 10) while also finishing first in her specialty, the triple jump (32-07.50). She would cap off her afternoon with a strong performance in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 10.16 seconds.
Just like the boys, the girls would also come together and put forth a strong performance in the sprint medley as the team of Kendra Petersohn, Cambryn Rubin, Nell Graham, Brenna Essig finished second behind Lanesboro (4:34.05) with a time of 4:46.09.
While there were no team scores recorded, it was a great start to Triton’s season as they’ll host their first meet of the season on Tuesday.
