Byron girls track finishes fifth in Menomonie
The Byron girls track and field team took it inside to open their season as they went all the way up to Menomonie, Wisc. To take part in the Northern Badger Invitational. The meet, which was held at the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Mar. 23, was the first meet for the Bears as they looked to set the bar high for the upcoming season.
The field at the meet was tough as the Bears competed with 28 schools from Wisconsin, but they held their own with a team finish of fifth place (33.5) behind Prescott (47), Spencer (41), Colby (39), and Marathon (35). In order to post a high finish, the Bears had several standout performances including Taylor Kreitinger’s in the 800 meter run.
The senior delivered a great opening performance as she finished first in the event with a time of 2:28.06. Kreitinger’s performance also teamed with Annika Johnson, who also finished in the top-ten of the 800 meter run with a time of 2:46.59.
Those times helped set a strong day on the track for the Bears, as they saw several athletes finish in the top-ten of their respective events. Eighth-grader Michela Hamilton finished third in the 3200 meter run with a time of 13:42.63 while Olivia Amudson finished ninth (28.71 seconds) in the 200 meter dash and Ally Akervik finished 10th in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:09.50.
The Bears saw plenty of success on the field as well with a strong performance in the triple jump. Sophomore Grace Warmsbecker led the way with a third place finish in the event with a hop, skip and jump of 30-11.75 and Taylor Dean finished sixth with a leap of 29-04.00.
Byron’s strong day would be capped off with Olivia Gartner finishing sixth in the high jump (4-08.00) and Paige Coleman (6th, 8-00) and Claire Graham (7th, 7-00) finishing in the top-ten of the pole vault.
The Bears will look to improve off their opening meet success when they take part in the Rochester Invitational on Thursday afternoon at RCTC.
