BREAKING NEWS: Ex-cop sentenced in sex abuse

A former Kasson police officer will be spending the next 18 years behind bars for his
role in sexually assaulting three family members over a 20-year period.
On Wednesday morning, an Olmsted County District Court Judge sentenced Julio
Baez to 18 years in prison. Baez will first serve 90 days at the St. Cloud Correctional
Facility before corrections officials determine where he will spend the rest of his
sentence.
In court Wednesday, victim impact statements from family members were shared
with the court. One of the victims stated she wants nothing to ever do again with
Baez. Another victim said it has been difficult for her to come to terms with who her
father really is in light of the years of abuse.
Kasson Police Chief Kent Berghuis and Dodge County Sheriff Scott Rose were among
those in attendance at Wednesday’s sentencing.
Baez was charged with 18 counts of sexual abuse last year. On Jan. 18, Baez pleaded
guilty to one felony in each of the three counties he had been charged in. The pleas
represented each of the three victims.
