Athetes head home for Sections meet

Senior hurdler Hector Bugarin out-hurdled the sub-section 2 field at Grand Meadow on Thursday evening to win both hurdle events and advance to the Section 1A meet at Triton on Tuesday. Bugarin ran a 17.02 to easily beat Connor Ford of Stewartville’s time of 17.46 in the high hurdle event. He, again, topped Ford in the 300-meter intermediate hurdle race with his 42.63 clocking to Ford’s 43.55 time. Those two, along with Stewartville’s Dylan Deetz’s third place finish, qualified for the section meet. 
Triton’s lone other winner on the evening was sophomore Leif Bungum in the 200-meter dash. After getting edged in the 100-meter dash by Stewartville’s Isaiah Jacobsen, Bungum came back with a strong 200 race into a stiff breeze and a 23.27 time, edging Cole Sunde of Blooming Prairie’s time of 23.40. 
To qualify for the section meet, athletes must have finished in the top three places at the subsection meet, had one of the top eight marks of the four subsections that competed or met the qualifying standard for the section meet. 
The Cobras will also be represented at the section meet by the girls 4x100-meter relay team of Greta Rhodes, Kendra Petersohn, Piper Yankowiak and Kiley Yankowiak. The quartet took third in the race with a time of 55.09. The boys 4x100 relay team also advanced with a time of 46.89 seconds. The members of the boys’ team were Bugarin, Chaz Stuve, Jax Bryngelson and Garrett Dahms. 
Seventh-grader Kendra Petersohn qualified for the section meet with her third place finish in the 300-meter low hurdles in a time of 49.92. It was the first time that Petersohn has broken the 50-second barrier. 
Nell Graham turned in another outstanding race in the 800-meter run, clocking a 2:30.59 time in finishing third and making the section 800 field. Courtney West ran a strong 3,200-meter run in just under 13 minutes to place third and also qualify. 
To round out the running events, both the girls and boys 4x400-meter relay teams ran strong third place races and advanced. The girls were led by Petersohn, Sydney Gilliland, Graham and Abby Gilliland. The boys team was made up of Nolan Ferber, Nick Simonette, Dahms and Stuve. 
Stuve also had a great night vaulting, placing third and clearing 10-4 in the pole vault competition. 
We were especially proud of the effort that our kids gave us that evening and for the season as a whole. We’re hopeful that we can get a couple of individuals and possibly a relay team advancing to the state meet at Hamline in early June.
Junior high completes season a KM Elite Meet
For a meet that was originally not on the schedule, Triton’s JH track athletes competed well against a large field of talented athletes at Kasson-Manorville’s JH Elite Meet. The meet is based off of a meet open to high school athletes held the last Friday of April at Hamline University in St. Paul. Athletes at that meet must submit performances and only a select few are able to compete because of limited field sizes. The largest field of competitors was in the 100-meter dash where 16 athletes ran preliminary races to pare the field down to eight for a final race.  All other races (other than distance races) were limited to seven or eight competitors/schools.
Thirty schools took part in the meet at KM Telecom Stadium in Kasson with team scores kept. Triton’s boys team finished with 40 points and finished seventh in the meet. The girls put 30 points on the board, which was good for sixth place. Waseca girls won the girls meet while the Stewartville boys outdistanced the rest of the boys field. 
The Cobra’s qualified a number of athletes to this meet and turned in four junior high school records on the evening.

As coaches, we were blessed to have such a talented group of young athletes this season. Each and every one of them worked hard and got to experience success. This group as a whole was as competitive a group as we’ve ever had. The improvement that they showed was nothing short of amazing. We look forward to big things out of this group and hope to build a strong team around them.
