Girl Scout Cookie Sales Begin On Friday
On Friday, January 11 the River Trails Girl Scouts will begin taking orders for cookies. This annual sale dates back to the origins of Girl Scouting, when thw troops baked their own cookies to sell. In addition to the familiar Chocolate and Vanilla Creams, Scot Teas, Mints, and Savannahs (peanut butter), there will be a new flavor this year — a lemon sandwich cookie. The cookies will be delivered to your home from February 21 to March 3.
Remember that proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Sale are used to help girls participate in special Girl Scout opportunities and to provide more direct services to the girls. Troops use their portion of the money for a wide range of troop activities, while individual girls may apply their earnings toward camp fees for the following summer.
This year there will be an additional incentive to sell cookies. Area and council prizes will be awarded to troops having the highest number of boxes sold per girl.

Lakewood jazz band concert
On Friday, January 14, the Lakewood community Jazz Band will be performing a concert for the K-M band students in grades 5-12 plus the 4th graders. The concert will be in the west half of the north gym from 12:20 to 1:10. The group is led by Dr. John Zdechlik..
In 1981, when some of Dr. Zdechlik’s former Lakewood Community College band students asked him to conduct a summer jazz band, little did he know that in 1994 the Lakewood Community College Jazz Ensemble would be one of the premier jazz bands in the country.
The band travels to various parts of the state, country and world with a recent tour of South America. Dr Zdechlik also travels and conducts all over the world. Last fall he conducted his own music in England. During the summer months he concentrates on writing his own music.
“The concert on the 14th will prove to be an exciting listening experience. Any interested community jazz or misic fan is invited to attend on Friday beginning at 12:20.

Mantorville’s Sesquicentennial Celebration Begins withSnow Day

Mantorville will begin its celebration of the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the town with a Snow Day on January 24, 2004. The Mantorville Restoration Association is sponsoring an event that will embrace winter, the community, and the history of Mantorville.
Snow Day will kick off with a proclamation of the sesquicentennial year by Mantorville mayor, Diane Carlson. The event is expected to be attended by local dignitaries. This will be followed by a once-in-a-lifetime-event-an all-town photo. All Mantorville and surrounding residents are invited to preserve this moment in Mantorville’s history by being part of an all-town photo.
A sesquicentennial medallion hunt will begin after the town photo. Clues to the location will relate to Mantorville’s history. The finder will receive the commemorative sesquicentennial medallion and a $150 prize.

The Mantorville Theatre Company Announces Auditionsfor “Lend MeA Tenor”
Auditions for the Mantorville Theatre Company’s production of Ken Ludwig’s “Lend Me A Tenor” will be January 19 and January 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mantorville Opera House. The play will be directed by Cheryl Frarck.
There are four female and four male roles of varying levels of adulthood. Although this is not a musical, singing ability will help for some of the roles.
“Lend Me A Tenor” is a hilarious farce in the classic comedy tradition. In this story, the Cleveland Grand Opera Company is excited to host the famous star, Tito Merelli, as the lead in their production of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Otello”. The Chairwoman of the company is excited because of the opportunity of being “discovered.” Saunders, the General Manager of the Opera is excited because his neck is on the line if anything goes wrong. His daughter Maggie is excited because (sigh!) it’s Tito Merelli!
Tito is late, which starts things off in a few tense moments, and the intensity only grows upon his arrival. Accompanied by his wife, Maria, both fit the stereotype of the hot-blooded Italian to a “T.” Tito has a bit of a reputation for flirtations, so when Maria discovers Maggie hiding in the closet (through totally innocent circumstances, we assure you!) She gets just a little upset. Eventually, Tito settles in to take a nap to rest for his performance --- but for reasons mor comic than tragic, he doesn’t wake! What is Saunders to do? There must be a performance with Tito Merelli!
“Lend Me A Tenor” is directed by Cheryl A. Frarck. It plays Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2:00 p.m., March 28 through, April 13,2014
