American Legion Auxiliary To Sell Poppies
Poppy Days in Kasson and Mantorville will be Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18 when members of the American Legion Auxiliary will be selling the poppies.
The people in this country wear the poppy once a year to signify the feeling of reverence in their hearts for theservicemen who died for America during the two World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. The poppy is their flower. It grew on the battlefields of Europe where so many men fought and died. This flower grew along the battle lines and among the graves of American dead: because of this it has become the symbol of their sacrifice.
But in addition to serving as a memorial to the war dead, the poppy helps lighten the burden carried by the men who returned disabled in mind and body. Making poppies gives employment to veterans who otherwise would not be able to earn support for themselves and their families. What form of aid could be more effective than helping veterans aid themselves with productive work? Poppy Day provides and annual opportunity for the American public to offer encouragement and support to these men.

Methodist Church continues to aid hurricane victims
The Kasson and Pleasant Corners United Methodist Churches will be bringing two junior high boys from Miami, Florida to Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch June 13-17. This is a continuation of the churches efforts to help victims of Hurricane Andrew in South Florida.
The boys, Wesley Green and Brian Murphy, are members of the Kerr Memorial United Church. Their families, and their church, were devastated by Hurricane Andrew.
The purpose of the experience is to give these young people the opportunity to get away from the devastation of the hurricane, the crime of their city and provide them with a positive camping experience in a Christian camp setting.
The Rev. Dr. Jimmie Brown, pastor of Kerr Memorial United Methodist Church said, “This experience will be a lifechanging event for these young men. It will give them an opportunity to get away from the crime and stress of the city and be around positive role models. We are grateful to the people of Kasson for their continued support of our church and young people as we struggle to recover from the terrible devastation of Hurricane Andrew.

Spring choir concert
The choirs of First Presbyterian Church will be holding a public concert on Sunday, May 23, 2004. The concert is under the direction of Gayle Kaufeld. The accompanists will be Dan Kaufeld and QuinitaKase. The Sunbeam choir (elementary school age) and the Senior choir will be singing some of their favorite music. Sonseekers choir members (Middle School) will join in a mass choir for special numbers. The concert will be held at First Presbyterian Church 101 6th Avenue NW in Kasson on May 23ed at 7:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served afterwards. There will be a free will offering to go to our church music fund. The public is invited!

Environmental study requested for Shopko
The Environmental Quality Board (EQB) received a petition requesting that an Environmental AssessmentWorksheet (EAW) be prepared for the Shopko Hometown project. They have determined the city of Kasson is the appropriate governmental unit to decide the need for an EWA.
