The City of Kasson and SL Contracting have made an out of court settlement in regard to the bidding on the 7th Street construction project. The city and SL Contracting owner Scott Lampland were to go to court Monday, October 22 and Judge Joe Wieners was to rule on the matter. The city and Lampland settled out of court. The city is to pay Lampland $4000 for his attorney fees and $1,500 for his time in bidding the project for a total of $5,500. The 7th Street improvement project ties in with the new aquatic center since larger water lines were needed to handle the flow of water to the new pool. The project was expected to take two weeks. Heselton Construction of Faribault had the low base bid on the project of $133,362. With the alternate A bid that added $145,388 to the project, which made them $2,000 higher than the base and alternate A bid submitted by SL Contracting. The SL base bid was $139,710, but alternate A bid was some $9,000 less than Heselton which made SL Contracting the low for the base and alternate A. There were seven bidders on the project. Lampland filed the temporary injunction. Court was avoided when attorneys from both sides settled before the October 22 court date.

The annual Girl Scout Halloween Carnival and Food Drive held on Saturday, October 26, 2002, in Kasson, was an enormous success. The response by the community for the annual food drive service project was overwhelming. Hundreds of food items were donated, weighing in at an estimated 1,000 pounds! These food items and personal care products were delivered to the St. John’s food shelf in Kasson on Sunday. Marlene M. was all smiles seeing the wonderful donation that will help to refill the shelves. Three year-old Alydia B. was the winner of the Guessing Jar, guessing the exact amount: 108 tootsie rolls! The Kasson-Mantorville Just-For-Kix dancers, decked out in Halloween Costumes, entertained the crowds during the carnival.

Work continues on the several safety improvements on US 14, such as concrete repair, edge drains, new shoulders and the installation of the warning flashers at the two intersections at Byron. But one major improvement is complete, available for use, and according to inspectors at the site, almost no drivers are making use of it. This is the pair of acceleration lanes that were installed for the left turn east movements at both the County 5 and the County 34 intersections. For the driver leaving Byron and heading toward Rochester, the acceleration lane offers a very safe and efficient entry into the flow of eastbound traffic. After crossing the westbound roadway, turn into the acceleration lane to bring your vehicle up to the speed of the traffic flow, then merge into the first gap that appears. The merging movement is much safer and simpler than attempting to enter directly from the intersection into the main flow of traffic. available.

Three area youths were injured in a one car accident Saturday when the driver, Terry Lynn Jensen, lost control on a curve. The car went into the ditch and rolled over according to the Dodge County Sheriff’s office. All three youths, Terry, Randy Finley and Gregory Vandermarker were taken to St. Marys Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance and it is reported that two of the boys were still in the hospital on Monday. The accident occurred on Dodge County Road No. 12 at 3:10 p.m. and is under investigation by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department.
