KoMets earn a Stewartville sweep

For a majority of the season, the big story surrounding the Kasson-Mantorville baseball team has been the inability to get key hits at the plate. While the team has been able to use their athleticism to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes on the basepaths, a key hit here and there would take this team from a team in the middle of the HVL to the top.

Last week, K-M showed both their strengths and weaknesses at the plate as they began their week with a game at Rochester Lourdes. In what became an intense pitching battle, Brendan Knoll and Sam Hansen exchanged zeroes until the bottom of the fourth.

Matt Raymond would lead off the inning for Lourdes with a double and would eventually score when Andy Plein committed an error on a single by Carter Greguson. That run would be the lone blemish on Knoll’s day as he threw six shutout innings with eight strikeouts and a walk while scattering five hits.

“Brendan has been great all year for us,” K-M baseball coach Broc Threinen said of the junior. “He has commanded the fastball and is also confident in his other pitches. He’s also mentally and emotionally stronger than he’s been a year ago and we’re proud of him and what he’s done this year.”

While the KoMets got great pitching, they were shut down at the plate by Hansen. The junior would hold to four hits on the evening while striking out seven in a complete game shutout and a 1-0 victory.

“It was disappointing to get a loss in that game,” Threinen lamented. “We had such great efforts against Lourdes, but the kids have stayed positive and they continue to work hard to improve.”

After some rain washed out a pair of attempts to get a game with Kenyon-Wanamingo in, the KoMets would take the field again in a double-header at Stewartville on May 14.

K-M would have a slow start in the first game as they were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Drew Kirmse, Knoll, Jack Peterson and Jacob Gruber would each hit a double to give the KoMets a 3-0 lead.
