Four Cobras earn all-HVL honors

The scene at the HVL track and field championship meet in Byron on Saturday was a familiar one. There was the sun that would come in and out of the clouds and athletes from all over the conference competing hard around the track and during multiple field events. Unfortunately, there was just one thing missing that would make it a perfect afternoon.

“Saturdays and May are supposed to be filled with warmth, breeze and sunshine,” Triton track and field coach Bruce Huber stated. “I guess one out of three isn’t bad for the middle of the month.”

As temperatures hovered in the low 40’s with a frigid wind swirling around the track, the Triton track and field team was able to shake it off with four athletes claiming all-conference honors by the end of the afternoon.

Courtney West was named all-conference after a pair of runner up finishes in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. After finishing behind Byron’s Taylor Kreitinger in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:21.58 she was just behind Stewartville’s Chrissy Loughren in the 3200 meter run at 11:36.93. Both times shattered the sophomore’s season, personal best and school record times which have seemingly gotten lower every time she takes the track.

Nell Graham also took honors home after finishing second in the 800 meter run behind Kreitinger with a time of 2:26.90. The freshman also finished in sixth-place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:41.36.

Jax Bryngelson was the lone competitor to earn all-conference honors on the boys side as he placed seventh in the 200 meter dash with a personal-best time of 24.03 seconds. He also placed seventh in the long jump at 19’10.5” while anchoring the 4x100 meter relay along with Fernando Bugarin, Kyle Mitchell and Devin Dohrmann for a time of 48.14 seconds that was good for sixth-place.

Other great performances at the conference meet included eighth-grader Kendra Petersohn, who finished eighth in the 400 meter dash with a personal-best time of 1:06.03 and the 4x100 meter relay team of Greta Rhodes, Jenna Jenson, Cambryn Rubin and Kiley Yankowiak, who finished sixth with a time of 55.55 seconds.

The 4x400 relay team of Grahm, Rhodes, Jenson and Petersohn finished in seventh-place with a t ime of 4:32.06.

Trace Sackett also had a nice day for Triton as he finished eighth in the 1600 meter run (5:03.79) and fifth in the 3200 meter run (11.06.08). The boys 4x400 relay team of Bugarin, Mitchell, Dahms and Ferber also placed seventh (3:55.41) while
