Cobras earn first playoff win since ‘09
The Triton softball team has been battling their youth and inconsistencies all season, but was able to see some success in the Section 1AA softball tournament last week. The biggest highlight for the team came in their opening game against Rochester Lourdes where they picked up a win to advance to the second round before falling in games against Pine Island and GMLOK.
“This was a great week for Triton softball,” Triton softball coach Laura Strandell declared. “I told the girls that once the playoffs come, every team in the state has to end their season on a loss besides the state champions. Therefore, we don’t dwell on our losses, but remember the great victories and progress the Cobra softball program has made this season.”
The Cobras would open their playoff run in Rochester against Lourdes in a game that featured inclement weather on May 23. After a dance off that featured both teams in the middle of the softball diamond, it appeared like there was a chance that the game would be played, but another couple lighting strikes meant that it would be held off until the following afternoon.
Once the game got rolling, Lourdes would pick up a run in the bottom of the second. The Cobras would answer with two in the top of the third, but find themselves behind after a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth.
As both teams battled back and forth, the Eagles held a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh. However, a Triton rally would plate a pair of runs to take the lead and hold on for a 5-4 victory.
“The girls played their best softball of the season against Lourdes,” Strandell observed. “I was proud of their effort in what was a really exciting win.”
