Bombers spoil KoMet homecoming

The Kasson-Mantorville KoMet football team drew a huge crowd for its annual Homecoming game on Friday night as it looked to carry the momentum from last week’s thrilling victory over Byron in front of hometown fans.Unfortunately, the Cannon Falls Bombers had other ideas and picked up a shocking 14-10 victory over the KoMets.The game started well for the KoMets as they were able to get an interception on the Bombers’ first drive. Everything looked well as K-M headed toward the Cannon Falls’ goal line, but Matt Winkle fumbled on a confusing play and the Bombers pounced on it to seize the momentum.Cannon Falls would race down the field and Mason Beissel would find Kyler Banks for his first of two touchdown passes to give the Bombers a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter, but the KoMets weren’t going to go down without a fight.Winkle moved the KoMets down the field on the next drive and gave the ball to Andy Bigelow for a 24-yard touchdown. With Andy Plein hitting the extra point, K-M took a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter.From there, both teams played evenly in the first half and they went into the locker room by the same score. The KoMets wanted to jumpstart their offense in the second half and that meant the return of quarterback Brady Berge, who missed the last two games with a hip injury.While the return wasn’t immediate, the KoMets were able to force another Bomber turnover when Kaleb Klepel made a leaping interception and returned it to the Cannon Falls 10-yard line. However, the KoMets’ theme of the year has been shooting themselves in the foot and an excessive contact penalty put K-M back at the 35 which lead to a Plein field goal.“We still got three points, but you could have gotten a touchdown there,” K-M head coach Broc Threinen recalled. “With the momentum of that play, things could have been different. Our defense played great, but we had some bad penalties that really cost us.”
