Upbeat about future of DCI

Since moving back home to Minnesota, I have taken an interest in the number of people who have been upbeat about the future of the Dodge County Independent.

There are those who have been focused on the DCI in this commu- nity newspaper because they’ve invested so much of their lives in the business.

For example, the Carlsen family
- Folmer and Randy Carlsen and
their families— continue to be ar-
dent supporters. There are others
who, initially said they’d never ad-
vertise in the DCI, who have taken
that first step and began some advertising.

Because advertising is the primary manner of pay- ing the bills at the DCI, support from local businesses is critical.

As much as advertising is the lifeblood of this and any other newspaper, citizens participating in news gathering is equally vital to a healthy newspaper.

There are folks out snapping photos at their daugh- ter or son’s basketball, volleyball contest or hockey games. They’re there to support their kids.

I am throwing out an invitation to those parents and siblings who are taking photos at K-M KoMets events, Byron Bear games, Triton or Hayfield to share them with us. We’ll publish as many as we can each week and place the others in albums our Facebook and our website.

All we ask is that you give a little information with each photograph, naming individuals participants, the game score, date and other information that will help our readers understand each photo.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a thousand folks with cameras taking photos is worth hundreds of thousands of words.

I’m asking each community member to engage and gather information that will be shared with readers, Facebook friends and those who visit our website. It’s my way of saying, “Hey, you’re taking shots that you’ll share with your family but how about sharing them with all of us!”

It would make our editor, Karen Jorgensen and our sports editor, Alex Nuehring revved up in a way that will enhance what they do week in and week out.

In addition to those two relishing the thought of reader participation, grandma and grandpa who are spending time in warmer climes would enjoy seeing their grandchildren in the paper. Who knows, there may be an aspiring photojournalist out there who will burst on the scene and seal their future.

Email photos, stories and ideas to Karen Jorgensen at editordci@kmtel.com or sports photos and stories to Alex Nuehring at dcisports9@gmail.com.

For the first photographer who submits an album of photos from an area event, the DCI will donate tickets to Chanhassen Dinner Theater’s presentation of the Music Man.
