Sharon M. Katzung, 70, Owatonna

Sharon M. Katzung, 70, of Owatonna, died Friday, Feb. 13, at Homestead Hospice House. 

She was born Jan. 12, 1945 in Owatonna, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Wanous) Ptacek. She attended rural school district 87 and then graduated from Owatonna High School with the class of 1962.  During high school she worked at the Central Bakery.  

On Sept. 15, 1962, she married the love of her life Jerry Katzung.  She worked in the records department at Federated Insurance for a short time.  In December of 1963 she started working part time at Stockwell Accounting doing income tax and continued working there for 51 years.  She really enjoyed the work and many of the clients became special friends to her.  She also worked part time for Tom and Linda Stockwell doing bookwork for their businesses.  

In 1965 Jerry and Sharon bought their farm South of Owatonna, working side by side they started their farming operation raising hogs and growing crops.  Sharon became involved in the Pork Producers organization and held many positions on the local and state level.  She also served many years on the Steele County Farm Service Agency Board.  

Sharon always felt she and Jerry were very blessed to have three children.  As their children were growing up, she became involved in their activities, becoming a 4-H leader for many years, while serving on the adult 4-H leader council, 4-H food stand committee, and on the parent council at the University of Minnesota Waseca campus.  She also volunteered with FFA activities and Lincoln School PTA.  Sharon was involved in the Santa’s Cellar Craft Sale for many years, known for her pigskin leather ornaments, lefse, and Kolackys.  

Sharon was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church her entire life.  She always felt the greatest gift in her life was her husband Jerry, their three children and spouses, and their eight grandchildren.  She was so very proud of all of them and always enjoyed spending time with them and going to their activities.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry; three children, Lisa (Clark) Bauman of Marshfield, Wis., Cindy (Paul) Hokanson of Owatonna, and Kelly (Sheila) Katzung of Owatonna; eight grandchildren, Sam and Ella Bauman, Justin and Brandon Peeters, and Kayle, Jacob, Joshua, and Jace Katzung.  She is also survived by her sister in laws, Lois Ptacek of Harmony, Eileen Ptacek of Owatonna, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. 

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; brothers, Eugene Ptacek, Myron Ptacek; nieces, Linda and Valerie.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Reverend John Sauer officiating.  Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Owatonna.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.
