Orlo Baslington, 87, Battle Lake

Orlo Baslington, 87, of Battle Lake, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Essentia Health in Fargo, North Dakota.

Orlo Gene Baslington was born on April 18, 1936, to Fred and Ina (Page) Baslington in Mantorville, Minnesota. He graduated from Mantorville High School in 1954. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota from 1954 to 1956, receiving an Associate of Liberal Arts Degree. In 1960, Orlo graduated from Mankato State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in social studies and speech. He received a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from South Dakota State University in Brookings in 1965.

On August 1, 1965, Orlo married Barbara Johnson at Calvary Lutheran Church in Hendricks, Minnesota. They were blessed with three daughters; Jill, Kathy, and Julie. Orlo taught junior high speech and social studies at Hendricks Public Schools for a few years. He held the position of High School Principal at Hendricks Public Schools from 1964 until his retirement in 1997. He and his family enjoyed spending summers at their cabin on West Battle Lake. In 2005, Orlo and Barb built their present home on the lake.

Orlo’s faith in God was central to his life. He was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church, being president of the congregation for many years.  He was a current member of Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. In earlier years, Orlo enjoyed golfing, bowling and fishing. He liked attending concerts and watching sports, always cheering on the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He was a life-long learner and had an affinity for reading newspapers, especially the Star Tribune. He cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren.

Orlo is survived by his wife Barbara of Battle Lake; children Jill (Garry) Hart of Austin, Kathy (Jerry) Danielson of Long Prairie, and Julie Baslington of Fergus Falls; grandchildren Joshua (Nena) Hart, Kallie (David) Nunez, Marissa (Jamar Suggs) Hart and Cooper, Jordan (Michelle) Danielson and Maverick, and Kale Danielson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ina Baslington.

Funeral Service: 11:00 am, Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Interment: 4:00 pm, Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Hendricks Cemetery in Hendricks, Minnesota.
