For nearly two decades, Ready Set Learn has been quietly transforming the back-to-school season for hundreds of Dodge County families.
What began in 2007 as a grassroots effort to provide school supplies to local students has grown into a year-round, volunteer-run nonprofit that now serves more than 500 children annually.
Tanya Young, who has served as program coordinator for the past eight years, said the organization is already preparing for its biggest year yet.
“We’re already at 302 kids, and our goal is to get closer to 600,” Young said. “We want to make sure every child in Dodge County starts the school year with the tools they need to succeed.”
Ready Set Learn supports students who live in or attend school in Dodge County, including those in the Triton, Kasson-Mantorville and Hayfield districts. Families can apply
for assistance through July 25.
This year’s distribution event will take place Aug. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. John’s Church in Kasson, where the program is based. Students will be able to choose their backpacks, which are filled with supplies tailored to their grade level. Younger children receive a paper pack with folders and notebooks, while older students receive composition books, filler paper and other essentials.
“The most commonly requested items are notebooks and backpacks,” Young said. “We try to meet those needs as best we can.”
Backpacks and supplies are purchased in bulk from vendors like Bags in Bulk. This year, the Dodge County Salvation Army donated backpacks and Target contributed paper supplies. The program is financially supported by local businesses and individual donors. Contributions can be made by check, cash or school supply donations, which can be dropped off at St. John’s or arranged by appointment. The organization also shares updates and donation needs through its Facebook page.
Ready Set Learn is more than just a supply drive. It is a community effort. The board includes school counselors and other local leaders who help guide the program’s mission and connect with families.
Young also runs the Dodge County Salvation Army, which operates out of St. John’s Church. Her dual role allows her to connect families with additional resources and support throughout the year.
“We get to know our families,” Young said. “It’s not just about handing out a backpack. It’s about showing kids and parents that someone cares.”
The organization hopes to eventually secure a permanent space in the area to better serve the growing number of families in need.
“Anyone can help,” Young said. “Whether it’s donating supplies, writing a check or just spreading the word, it all makes a difference.”
