Kasson council member abruptly resigns

Less than a year after being sworn in as a Kasson city councilmember, Brian Wempner has abruptly resigned from his position.
“It is with heavy heart and regret that due to personal reasons beyond my control I have been forced to move away from the Kasson community and will be resigning my position on the city council effective immediately,” Wempner wrote in his resignation letter. “I am sorry I cannot be there in person to deliver this message at this time.”
Wempner confirmed on Monday night he plans to move to rural northern Iowa for personal reasons.
“I appreciate the residents of Kasson for trusting me to help make decisions that affect the whole community, I only wish I had had more time to do so,” he wrote in his letter.
Wempner said he was appreciative of everyone who helped him in his position.
“To all the city staff, Tim, Mayor, and fellow council members thank you for everything you provided in terms of training, lessons to be learned, and debate to be had,” he wrote. “I really enjoyed my time on the council and I hope others in the community realize how important participation in local government is. I will truly miss this community I have called home for over 10 years.”
A post on the city’s Facebook page thanked Wempner for his time on the council and announced how the vacancy would be filled.
“Mayor Eggler is reviewing applications and will make a recommendation to fill the seat later this month,” the post read.
