K-M, Triton football teams open season with wins

It’s not often football games are delayed due to weather.

But it might be exactly what helped the Triton Cobras dominate Maple River during its home opener last Thursday, winning 42-13.

“We endured a 45 minute lightning delay near the end of the 1st quarter, which was really a blessing, we used the time to calm some of the nerves of our players and we came out of the delay with a renewed focus and attention to detail,” Head Coach Brandon Neseth said after the game.

Leading the team was running back Brody Munnikuysen who Neseth said had a big game” rushing for 154 yards, along with four touchdowns, most of which came in the second quarter.

Due to the large lead, the Cobras coaching staff made the decision to pull most of its starters from the game after three quarters, and the fourth quarter had a running clock.

“It was a good first game for the Cobras, we did a nice job of responding after the delay,” Neseth wrote following the game. “It was encouraging to see so many boys starting for the 1st time playing at the level they played at last night.”

K-M Wins on Road

After giving up a touchdown early on the road at Delano, the Kasson-Mantorville KoMets went on to score 20 unanswered points for its first victory of the season.

Leading the KoMets was J Peterson who scored a 64-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter to tie the game at 7 going into the half.

In the third C Horning would score on a 15-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a touchdown in the fourth via a two yard run.

Byron, Hayfield Lose Season Openers

After heading into the second half trailing by just one score against Providence Academy, the Byron Bears weren’t able to pull off a victory in the team’s home opener.

“lots of improvement to be made but kids played really hard,” Head Coach Ben Halder said following the game.

In other area football action, the Hayfield Vikings football team was defeated on the road against Fillmore Central 47-6.
