A comedic Western takes the stage at Hayfield High School
Comedy meets Western in this funny, family-friendly play that takes the stage in Hayfield.
“Pecos Bill & Slue-Foot Sue Meet the Dirty Dan Gang” will be staged Nov. 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. at Hayfield High School. Students are $5 and adults are $10.
Twenty-seven students in grades 6 through 12 are in the Pecos Bill production.
“It’s really a classic Western with good guys versus bad guys,” said director Jenny Dreyer. “It is comedy based. Pecos Bill is an American west legend.”
Reen VanderWall plays Pecos Bill; Ava Hoebing plays Slue-Foot Sue; EJ Austin plays Dirty Dan and Natalyn Ulwelling plays Lilly Grouch. Pecos Bill and Slue-Foot Sue are the play’s “good guys,” with Dirty Dan and Lilly Grouch taking the “bad guys” repertoire.
“Get on the wagon rollin’ West with this rip-roarin’ tale,” a Pecos Bill website proclaims. “It’s the saga of Pecos Bill, who was raised by coyotes, and Slue-Foot Sue, who likes to ride down the Rio Grande River on a catfish. They come to the dusty town of Prairie Dog to aid Granny, who is being threatened by Dirty Dan and his gang, bandits who quiver and shake whenever there’s mention of soap and water.”
“They hatch a plan to do Granny out of an unexpected fortune in gold. All manner of wild complications follow, ending up with the gang forced to bathe and attend classes in the local schoolhouse. The dialogue is loaded with laughs, the stage action uproarious.”
“Can Pecos Bill and his friends save the day?” Dreyer asks.
“This is a funny show with lots of fun Western characters,” she said. “The Hayfield players are very talented and having so much fun with this show. It’s one hour of laughs.”
Tickets and concessions are sold at the door for the “Pecos Bill” play.
The school’s next play is the spring musical “Seussical.”
