KM KoMets finish their COVID season with a win

Kasson-Mantorville KoMets had their last volleyball game of the season on their home turf against the Jordan Jaguars last week.

The first set started out with Jordan taking the lead 2-0 until Maddy Cummings and Shae Sands both received a kill tying the game 2-2. After a long back and forth round, Cummings got the ball through a block and down to the ground for another kill bringing the KoMets into the lead 4-2, and then Noelle Vanoort with a kill, clearly spreading momentum throughout the team and bringing the score up to a comfortable lead at 5-2.

The Jaguars get their second kill of the night bringing that lead back down a little bit to 6-4, but then their serves prove a bit too strong and they gave the KoMets another point from going out of bounds.

Vanoort had another rocket down to the center of the court which brought the score to 8-5. There was an entertaining play when Maddie Converse was able to get a tip over the net and the Jaguars tried to dive for it but they missed it and gave the point to an amped up team celebrating a 9-6 score. A timeout was called by the Jaguars and afterwards Anna Braun started what would be a repetitious game of doubles when she got an ace that brought them to 14-7, then eventually 16-8, 18-9, and 20-10.

Cummings got another one down after a Jaguar tried to slide for it but was unsuccessful, 21-10, following with Vanoort’s help of her fifth kill of the night, another doubled score, 22-11. Jordan then had a netting error, which was not what they needed when up against the KoMets great teamwork in this first set. KoMets winning 25-12.

Cummings started out the second set with a kill 1-0. In this second set, Jordan brought a lot more intensity, enabling them to continue tying up with the KoMets. They tied point to point from 1-1 all the way through 9-9, and yet again, 11-11. And these weren’t just back and forth points, most were deserved after a great play.

Jordan had a really nice serve to the back corner which the KoMets played only for it to go out of bounds, which gave them a 2-2 tie. Vanoort got a well-played kill when she barely got it past a Jaguar, now a 3-3 tie. Annika Larson had a huge leap to get a kill, 6-6 tie.

Cassidy Thompson had a block up front which was the first block to score a point in this game, leading into a 9-9 tie. The KoMets finally found a moment to get out of the tying game with a 2-point lead, unfortunately not lasting very long as the Jaguars quickly got their 11-11 tie. The KoMets were then able to uphold a decent lead when Addy Bzoskie made a kill right on the out of bounds line, narrowly counting as a point for the KoMets, 16-13. Larson was on fire when she got another kill, shifting their score to 17-14.

Cate Wanous had a great dive and she succeeded in saving the ball, but as it continued in play, the Jaguars were able to add to the scoreboard, 18-16. However, there were no worries as Jordan made a couple netting errors and KM made it to 20 while Jordan was still at 16.

Suess had two great plays in a row and she secured the lead with a score of 24-19. The KoMets thrived again and won the second set 25-19.

The third set began with the Jaguars playing it out of bounds, and along with Bzoskie’s third kill of the night, KM was leading on the scoreboard 3-0.  Jordan slowly started to catch up, but before the KoMets had a chance to realize, they were now tied 7-7, the Jaguars earning the tying point to an ace. Despite an ACL injury, Olivia Matuska received her first kill of the night and brought the score up to 12-8. Jordan then had tipped it over hoping it would earn them a point, but it just made it into the out of bounds territory, backfiring on them, and actually allowing the KoMets to receive the point. Both Thompson and Bzoskie got another kill along with Avery Irish, putting the scoreboard back into the doubles game at 22-11.

The KoMets won the third set after Vanoort’s fifteenth kill of the night, final score 25-11.

The KM KoMets won their last match of the season 3-0, they finished with five aces and three blocks this match and Jordan Jaguars finished with two aces and two blocks.

It was an amazing season for the KoMets, finishing with an outstanding record of 10-3.
