Cobras victorious over Z-M Cougars

After a tough loss last week, the Triton football team bounced back by winning their home opener 21-12 over Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Friday, Sept. 6.

Head Coach Mike Ellingson said the difference between winning and losing was getting some clutch plays.

“We made plays when we needed them. Not our best output but finding a way to win close games is necessary for good teams,” he said.

One reason the Cobras won their close game was the play of Parker Boe in the second quarter.

He provided two big runs, 59 and 23 yards, to score a touchdown right before halftime.

That touchdown gave Triton a 14-6 lead as they headed into halftime.

Ellingson mentioned that the team focused on their run defense during the break.

“Most adjustments were defense related, we were disappointed to give up over 100 yards rushing by halftime again. This is something that needs to be a focus for us moving forward,” he said.

He was pleased with how his team executed in the second half.

“We played much better in the second half, found ways to limit runs. The tackles for loss were big adds for momentum,” he said.

While the defense played better in the second half, he said the offense needs to keep grinding.

“We are a missed read or block away from breaking the game open,” he said.

Even though the Cobras were close to winning by a lot more points, Ellingson added there is always time for improvement. A couple examples he gave were forcing turnovers and communicating better.

On defense, Noah Thomas led the way with four tackles. Braxton Munnikhuysen registered the Cobras’ only sack. Defensive lineman Corbin Giesler recorded two tackles for loss, while Austin Melder and Parker Boe each added one tackle for loss.

Triton travels to Chatfield to take on the Gophers on Friday, Sept. 13.

Triton: Passing - Mason Barker 5-11 for 64 yards and 1 TD. Rushing - Parker Boe 9 rushes for 129 yards and 1 TD, Austin Melder 9 rushes for 47 yards, Mason Barker 10 rushes for 10 yards, Jaxon Sackett 3 rushes for 6 yards, Braxton Munnikhuysen 1 rush for 3 yards, and the rest of the team 3 rushes for -6 yards.
