Mantorville art projects receive SEMAC grants

Three Mantorville arts projects have received grants from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC).

Grants were awarded to the Mantorville Art Guild for the Youth Summer Art Camp 2023, the Mantorville Economic Development Authority for Larger Than Life 2023, and the Mantorville Theatre Company for the 50th Anniversary MTC Summer Melodrama season.

Every summer the Art Guild sponsors its’ Summer Arts Camp. The 2023 camp schedule is for 10 camps with the first one June 19-20 and the final one August 7 to 11. Camps are of varying lengths and cover a wide range of topics including Fairy House for the Garden, Tree of Life Sculpture, Discovering Watercolor, Pour Painting, Many Ways to Paint, Ceramic Plate, Bowl and Tumbler Set, Charcoal Drawing, and Eye of the Artist.

The Larger Than Life Exhibit has become a yearly event in Mantorville with the 2023 display scheduled from July 1 to September 1. It is an outdoor art exhibit at Riverside Park that features photographs and other artwork by local artists that are displayed on a larger than life scale throughout the park. The 2022 display included 17 pieces by local photographers, artists and a sculptor.

The Mantorville Theatre Company provides year-round community theatre performed at the Historic Opera House.

The 2023 Summer Melodrama Season will include “She Aspired to Greater Things or Up the River Without a Paddle(boat)” in June, “Curse you, Jack Dalton,” in July, and “Willow Weep No More or A New Broom Sweeps Cleaner,” in August.

This month the Board of Directors of SEMAC awarded 42 arts programming grants for a total of $302,834 in funding to applicants throughout southeastern Minnesota. This included 34 Legacy grants for $264,074, four Programming Grants for $18,760, and four Small Towns/Rural Areas grants for $20,000.

SEMAC is the State Arts Board-designated granting authority for local/regional arts producing and sponsoring organizations and disburses funds allocated for this purpose by the Minnesota State Legislature. The SEMAC region includes the counties of Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, and Winona.

Peterson Committee for the Arts received a $5,000 Small Towns/Rural Areas grant for The Arts Blossom in Peterson — Summer Music Series.

Rushford Area Society of the Arts received a $5,000 Small Towns/Rural Areas grant for Seussical.

Goodhue County

The Anderson Center at Tower View received a $10,000 Legacy grant for Minnesota Children’s Book Festival.

Kenyon-Wanamingo Community Education received a $5,000 Small Towns/Rural Areas grant for Summer Community Theatre.

Red Wing Downtown Main Street received a $5,000 Legacy grant for Summer of Creativity.

Houston County

Mainspring received a $10,000 Legacy grant for SmallArt Gallery + Youth Art Collective.

Southeast Minnesota Bluegrass Association received a $10,000 Legacy grant for August 2023 Bluegrass Music Festival.

Mower County

Austin Symphony Orchestra received a $10,000 Legacy grant for Celebrating our 2022-2023 Season.

Welcome Center received a $2,180 Legacy grant for Inviting Table Community Dinners.

Olmsted County
