Triton’s top spellers head to Regional Spelling Bee

It was a war of words between Triton sixth, seventh, and eighth graders recently. When it was over two Triton students had earned the right to compete at the Southeast Minnesota 2023 Regional Spelling Bee February 7 in Rochester, sponsored by the Southeast Service Cooperative.

Just over a dozen students gathered at the Triton Middle School Library to begin the local District Level Bee.

Tricia Himlie, 8th grade language arts teacher, 6th grade reading teacher, and Spelling Bee coordinator, was in charge of each round, giving each student a different word which they wrote down on a piece of paper and then verbally spelled it out. Students were permitted to ask for a definition to aid in proper spelling.

Two judges were on hand, raising a green card if the word was spelled correctly and a red card if it was wrong.

A student was eliminated if they mis-spelled their word.

After a practice round, the contest began in earnest. The words got progressively more difficult with each new round.

When it was all over, seventh grader Kasha Locke was the top speller, followed by sixth graders, Rory Ginder in second place, and Kenzie Van Beek in third place. Both Kasha and Rory will advance to the Regional Bee.

In addition to the three students who placed, participants included: Brady Rongve, Casey Vermilyea, Elijah O’Keefe, Megan Rieck, Jackson Kraemer, William Thiemann, Hunter Hamm, Josue Munoz, Cinthia Felix, and Izaiha Maldonado.

The Regional Bee will be conducted in two separate sections on February 7.

Triton will compete in the 8:30 a.m. Bee going against spellers from Byron, Grand Meadow, Kasson-Mantorville, Kingsland, LeRoy-Ostrander, Plainview-Elgin-Millville, Rochester Catholic, Rochester Bamber Valley, Rochester Dakota, Rochester Kellogg, Rochester Lincoln K-8, Schaeffer Acadeny, St. Charles, and Stewartville. Thirty participants will be in the first session.

An afternoon Bee will see another 30 students competing from Austin, Caledonia, Chatfield, Fillmore Central, Divine Mercy/Bethlehem, Goodhue, Lanesboro, Lyle, Mabel-Canton, Northfield, Pine Island, Rushford-Peterson, St. Felix, St. Mary’s School-Owatonna, St. Theodore, Spring Grove, and Wabasha-Kellogg.

The top six spellers from each Bee will advance to the Southeast Minnesota Spelling Bee finals on February 21. The Grand Champion from that Bee will have the privilege of joining the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The National Bee will be held in June in Washington, D.C.
