Michael Neubeck hired as Byron superintendent

Dr. Michael Neubeck, principal at Mahtomedi Middle School will take over as the Byron School District superintendent on July 1.

Byron School Board members officially approved his contract Monday night pending completion of a background check.

Board members interviewed three finalists last Friday before choosing Neubeck.

In announcing the decision Friday, Board Chair Harvey Bergh said, “We believe Michael has the qualifications and skills to move the school district forward. He has demonstrated that he has vision and creativity and will continue to move the Byron School District forward on our ‘Profile of a Graduate.’ We look forward to working with Michael in his new capacity.”

The district had 13 applicants for the position and narrowed the number down to five for the first round of interviews. Three of those candidates were called back for the second interview.

The board and Neubeck agreed to contract terms Saturday paving the way for Monday’s board action.

Neubeck has his bachelor’s degree from Mankato State University, his master’s from the University of St. Thomas and doctorate from St. Mary’s University.

Neubeck will begin his duties on July 1, replacing Supt. Dr. Joey Page who has resigned effective June 30 to take over the top job in the Austin Public Schools.

With a new superintendent hired, the district now turns its attention to the bond referendum scheduled for next Tuesday, May 11.

The district is asking voters to approve a referendum with two questions totaling $41,485,00.

The first question authorizes the district to issue general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $29,700,000 for improvements to accessibility and safety at Byron High School; electrical, mechanical and building updates and replacements at the District Administration and Community Services Building; addition and equipping of classrooms at Byron High School; updates to Byron High School and Byron Middle School athletic facilities; updates to kitchen facilities at Byron Middle School, Byron Intermediate School and the District and Administration and Community Services Building and renovation of facilities for Community Education and Early Childhood Programs.

The second question asks for authorization to issue general obligation bonds not to exceed #11,785,000 for the addition and equipping of an auditorium and related facilities at Byron High School.

The district has been holding informational meetings since the referendum was approved in February. The final two meetings on scheduled from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, and on Monday, May 10, from noon to 12:45 p.m. Both meetings are in the DACS Board Room.

All votes will be cast at Byron Middle School, 601 4th St. NW. The polling place will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
