Breaking News: Car crash claims life in Steele County
A car crash in Steele County has taken the life of an Owatonna man.
Sheriff Lon Thiele identified the victim as Jason Jeffrey Ost, 30. He was driving a vehicle that hit another vehicle at County Road 45 and 58th Street about five miles south of Owatonna Monday around 7:30 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thiele said a 17-year-old boy was driving the other vehicle. The sheriff said the boy was on his way to school when the crash happened. His name has not been released.
Both the teenager and a passenger in Ost’s vehicle were taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to Owatonna Hospital and later transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Thiele did not know their conditions.
Preliminary investigation found that Ost was traveling northbound on County Road 45 when his vehicle was hit in the rear end by the other vehicle going eastbound on 58th Street. Upon impact, Ost was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene, according to Thiele.
The intersection is controlled by a stop sign for traffic on 58th Street, Thiele said.
The State Patrol responded to do reconstruction of the crash scene.
