Breaking News: Driver released in rural Olmsted crash

The driver involved in a crash on the Olmsted-Dodge County line Tuesday night that critically injured a Kasson boy has been released from jail without charges.

Olmsted County Attorney Mark Ostrem announced Thursday morning that Myles Thomas Keller, 69, has been released without charges at this time. Ostrem said his office needs more time to make an appropriate decision on charging, including receiving medical reports and incident reports. Authorities also do not have the results of a blood alcohol test back yet. The results could take up to six weeks.

Meanwhile, Lukas Wharton, 5, is clinging to life at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. He was playing outside with his siblings and riding down an embankment in a child’s wagon when a car driven by Keller hit him.

The crash happened in the 1700 block of 19th Avenue SW in Kalmar Township northwest of Byron around 5:46 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies took Keller into custody for probable cause DWI and criminal vehicular operation at the scene, but he has since been released without charges.

Sheriff’s officials declined to comment on Wharton’s prognosis other than to say he was in “very critical” condition.
