Child Care Provider of the Year

Rochelle Kasper was recently chosen as Dodge County Licensed Child Care Provider of the Year and was honored at the Minnesota Child Care Association Conference in Rochester on May 5. She felt honored to receive this award and believes that the reason she continues in daycare is the wonderful parents and families she has worked with throughout the years. They are the reason she enjoys her job so much. Rochelle is licensed for up to 14 children with a helper and has done daycare for 22 years. During the school year the children work on colors, shapes, counting, and ABC’s. When summer comes they put away their school work and have treasure hunts, swimming lessons, make stepping stones and play outside as much as possible. Rochelle has been married to husband Bob for 33 years and they have five children, two daughter-in-laws, a son-in-law and seven grandchildren. They live on a small hobby farm just south of West Concord and in their free time enjoy camping, working with cattle, organic vegetable gardening, making apple cider from their trees, and flower gardening. Traffic a concern in Mantorville
RV Park

The Mantorville city council recently discussed a concern RV park users started to complain about over one year ago. There has been an increasing amount of traffic cutting through from Fifth Street to Highway #57. City employee Mark Stevens did his own traffic study and the number of vehicles using Fifth Street (going past the old brewery) and Fifth Street (east) was eye opening. What was even more of a surprise was the number of vehicles cutting through off Fifth Street through the RV park for no other apparent reason other than to take a short cut to #57. For six days in April Stevens recorded the traffic count. The numbers revealed vehicles per day over a 24 hour period at each location. There are currently 37 homes in the city limits east of the brewery and 74 homes in the township that use fifth street daily for a total of 111 homes. The traffic count for fifth street (brewery route) was a high of 845 (Friday) over a 24 hour period and a low of 642 (Monday). The number of vehicles cutting through the RV campground ranged from a high of 125 on (Thursday) to a low of 69 (Monday). It should be noted the trailer park had only two units in place at that time so this was not a case of people coming in and out of the park. The RV park is well marked with a speed limit of 5 mph and another sign that reads, “No Thru Traffic.” The sign is posted at both ends. Mark Stevens said people driving through don’t pay attention to the signs. In most cases, speed is also an issue. Employees at the Citizens State Bank can attest to that during daylight hours. The council understood why people using the park would be upset because of the traffic. They came up with a couple of ideas to deal with the situation. The most receptive idea was to have speed bumps placed intermittently throughout the length of the blacktop road inside the RV park. The council could take some type of action at one of the May meeting. With the camping and RV season coming up, they would like to deal with the problem before the park gets busier. More RVs and less through traffic is what the council would like to see.

Seeing double!! Twins meet twins of another generation at seniors bldg.

This year National Honor Society students from K-M have been visiting senior citizens at the Kasson Senior Housing complex, located at 400 Second Street S.W., Kasson. At the last get-together guests and residents were seeing double. Present from the National Honor Society were twins Emily and Erin Smith and Jennifer and Laura Kinlund. A generation or two ahead of them was resident Flora Brown and her twin sister Florence Sorenson visiting from Florida. Their maiden name was Fullerton. Flora and Florence, the only twins dressed identical that day, had with them a picture of when they were the same age as the two sets of K-M High School juniors. That was 1935. Both graduated from Faribault High School in 1936. Flora married in July of 1939 and Florence in August that same year. The first gathering of the senior citizens and students was a get acquainted time. Last time students received a lesson in playing 500 and coming up the first part of May, they will be playing “Dirty Bingo” with the seniors. The twins at least had a couple of things to talk about. Perhaps the elderly twins gave some advice on what to expect and look forward to as the sets of younger twins grew older. Senior Housing resident Flora Brown is as frequent around the school as the Smith and Kinlund twins. She has been a volunteer at school for many years and now works as a “volunteer grandmother.” Jacque and Bill Huntoon, managers at the Senior Housing Complex, said the senior citizens really look forward to the times when the students make a special visit. At the last gathering, over 20 honor society students from school attended. “They have all overcome that initial shyness and any fears and have enjoyed mixing,” said Jacque about the young people. Just when one might think the two age goups don’t have much in common, three sets of twins show up at one gathering. They had a little more in common than the rest!
