Triton’s Petersohn hurdles to double state ti-tles

Star “trackster” Owen Petersohn ended the Cobras’ State title drought at the MSHSL State Track and Field Championships in St. Michael/Albertville High School on Thursday, Friday, June 9, 10. He achieved double-champion status in the Class A state track-and-field meet, winning both the 110m and the 300m hurdle events.

Among Owen’s personal missions was finishing first in both races. Mission Accomplished! In the 110m hurdles, Petersohn willed his way the final few meters to grab first place (he timed in at 15.23, and runner-up Simon Morgan, Mankato Loyola/Cleveland, recorded a 15.25). Owen dug deep again in the 300m hurdles, shooting from second position to first, with a last push over the final hurdle, reeling to the finish (Petersohn posted 39.97, and runner-up Griffin Paulsen (St. Croix Lutheran) finished in 40.27).

This was Triton’s first ever girl or boy, individual sport state champ.

“I wanted to be the person to do it,” said Petersohn, also a basketball and football standout at Triton, and who will compete in track and field next year at Minnesota State, Mankato.

“To do it not once, but twice, felt great. I also wanted to beat out my dad (Tracy Petersohn) by winning two. My dad won a state 800 title at Claremont back in 1988,” added Owen.

Triton Head Coach Kim Swanson says Petersohn is as deserving a champion as there is. “It’s just his work ethic and his guts. He has a ton of heart, and he just had an amazing finish in both races,” Swanson said.
