KoMets survive thriller in Byron

 With a 1-4 record coming into Friday night’s tilt with Byron, it’s easy to say that things haven’t gone according to plan for the Kasson-Mantorville football team. While the team has made its share of mistakes that have cost games, the one thing that can be said is that the KoMets haven’t stopped fighting.  This was apparent in a thrilling 28-25 victory over the Bears that contained ups and downs, big plays and everything a high school football fan loves to see in a game. This was a fun game to watch and play in, but the coaching staff only found it that way in retrospect. “It wasn’t much fun until the end for me,” K-M head coach Broc Threinen chuckled after the game. “We put ourselves in some bad situations. There were fumbles and penalties that came at tough times, but we moved the ball well outside of what we did to ourselves.” The KoMets started strong in what could be considered their best game of the year offensively.A four-play drive was capped by an Aaron Berge touchdown and the KoMets had a 6-0 lead 88 seconds into the game. As would be the case the entire evening, the Bears had an answer as they drove down the field  themselves with Ryan Thompson throwing to Mike Coble for an eight-yard touchdown to take a 7-6 lead. The Bears would extend that advantage at the end of the quarter when K-M would make one of several mistakes in the game. Matt Winkle lost the handle on the ball on a draw and Coble was able to strike again with a 40- yard fumble return for a touchdown. After a missed extra point, this gave the Bears a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
